The Muskies beat the visiting Marietta Pioneers in the annual Muskingum-Marietta Shriners Game 17-13.
This years game was the sixth in the Shriners series in which the Muskies are now 6-0.
The Muskingum offense came out strong in the first half led by running back Melvin Smith. Smith led the game in rushing with a season high 157 yards on the ground along with two touchdowns.
The Muskies ended the first half with a 30-yard Cody Dent field goal for a comfortable 17-0 lead.
In the second half it was all Pioneers. After only totaling four yards of total offense in the first half, Marietta practically exploded in the second, gaining 225-yards of total offense. The charge began with an Akil Young touchdown pass to Tyler Anderson for the first Marietta score of the day. The failed two-point conversion made it 17-6 Muskies.
After a Nick O’Neal one-yard touchdown run the Pioneers found themselves down just four, 17-13.
The nail in the coffin came when the Pioneers’ Young attempted to scramble for a first down on fourth and two. He was stopped dead in his tracks by freshman defensive back Dorian Maynard to seal the Muskie win.
The Muskies (2-7,2-6) will travel to Wilmington next Saturday for their final game of the 2014 season.
