For some Muskingum University students, Thursday nights are just another day of the week. For others, their favorite event is back.

Muskingum University Student Life Office and Student Senate were able to arrange and organize the return of Brewed Awakenings after a few meetings at the end of the fall 2021 semester.

Brewed Awakenings, often referred to as just “Brewed,” is “a fun place to come hang out, socialize with friends, and engage with student organizations,” said Katie Simms, Director of Student Leadership and Engagement. Students can come enjoy coffee provided by Chapman’s Coffee House and participate in the host’s activity.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Brewed was put on pause for the fall 2020, spring 2021, and fall 2021 semesters. Brewed can now operate with limited capacity.

The first host of Brewed Awakenings for the spring 2022 semester was Student Senate. Students were able to come to the basement of the Walter K. Chess Center and enjoy coffee, donuts, and tabletop games. Greek Council hosted the Jan. 21 event and provided Taco Bell, ice cream and of course, coffee.

Brewed will run every Thursday night from 8-10 p.m. in the bottom of the Chess Center through the end of the semester. A different organization will host each week.

Members of Student Senate check in students at Brewed Awakenings. Student Senate will host the last Brewed Awakenings event on April 21.

Muskingum University received a $100,000 grant from the Austin E. Knowlton Foundation to establish the Austin E. Knowlton Endowed Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to aid students majoring in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) discipline or related field.

The scholarship will be awarded annually and is renewable for four years. Preference is given to full-time, first-year students from Ohio. Candidates meeting the criteria are automatically considered upon admission to the university.

“We are grateful to the Knowlton Foundation for this generous gift and their support of Muskingum University,” said President Susan S. Hasseler. “This scholarship will further increase access to an excellent STEM education for students in this region and throughout the state.”

Throughout his lifetime, Austin E. Knowlton, also known as “Dutch”, helped build and shape thriving communities. As owner and Chairman of the Knowlton Construction Company, Dutch and his company were responsible for over 600 significant construction projects throughout Ohio and the Midwest, including school buildings, hospitals, libraries and post offices.

In 1981, inspired by his success made possible by the education he received, Mr. Knowlton established his namesake Foundation to empower future generations of students and to support the institutions dedicated to educating them. Today, through the Foundation, Mr. Knowlton’s beneficial impact on communities throughout the Midwest continues, by helping to prepare future generations of leaders.
