National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, put on by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), is Saturday, April 24.

This is the Drug Enforcement Administration’s 20th National Drug Take Back Day and the New Concord Police Department will be participating.

There are two take back days each year, one in April and in October.

New Concord Police Chief Mindy Peck has participated in four National Drug Take Back Days as New Concord’s Chief. Drop-offs will be accepted April 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

“We continue to participate in this to get legal prescription drugs out of the hands from people who don’t need them…keep away from kids, and it cuts back in prescription drug abuse,” said Peck.

Anyone can come to New Concord Village Hall and dispose of prescribed drugs that are no longer wanted. Being a village resident is not required.

Accepted drugs include pills, liquids, bottles vape pens, and e-cigarettes. There will be no sharps accepted.

“No questions asked, just drop them off,” said Peck.

The NCPD was one of 233 law enforcement agencies to participate in the October 2020 Drug Take Back Day.

“What we do every year after the drug take back is send an email and let them [DEA representative] know how many boxes we have and how much it weighs. Last year we had a total of five boxes, weighting 64.8 pounds. Which is largest collection we’ve had so far,” said Peck.

In October 2016 there was only one box.

“That shows how much people are using this [drug take back opportunity],” said Peck.

Chief Peck is hoping to surpass that number this Saturday.
