In the fall of 2025, Orbit Media and Muskingum’s campus newspaper, the Magenta Journal, merged to form the Orbit Media website—a centralized media hub for students interested in and passionate about immersive storytelling across digital platforms. On this page, you will find feature stories written by journalism students and students passionate about digital storytelling. These stories are non-fiction pieces rooted in professional and ethical journalistic guidelines and best practices.

The Magenta Journal

Through interdisciplinary student collaboration and independent reporting, we seek to elevate all voices of the campus community through engaging writing and multimedia storytelling. The mission of the Magenta Journal is to provide fair, accurate, and impactful journalism to inform and tell the stories about our campus and local community. Our writers report on issues near and dear to students and alumni, delving into human-interest stories that focus on the “who” and “why” of contemporary issues.

A LONG TRADITION

The first issue of the Black & Magenta, Muskingum University’s long-standing student newspaper, was published in 1902.

For more than a century, the newspaper served as a platform for student reporting on everything from student affairs and campus arts and events, to national politics and global wars.

With changing times and advancements in technology, the format of the newspaper has changed into a multimedia storytelling platform, but the values of independence, accuracy, integrity and student empowerment through writing remain the same.
