Muskingum University students will perform in A.R. Gurney, Jr.’s The Dining Room Feb. 16-18 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. in the Sandra Wolfe Thompson Theatre in Philip and Betsey Caldwell Hall.

The Dining Room is set in a single dining room, comprised of 18 scenes depicting 18 different families. Households are interrelated and create a portrait of the declining upper-middle class White Anglo-Saxon Protestant, focusing on special occasions, life lessons, and family matters.

Professor of Theatre and Director, Dr. Diane Rao, said she is very excited to present the play to the public and rehearsals are going well.

“We have actors that are going to be playing many characters,” said Rao. “This will make for a fun experience for audiences to see.”

Associate Professor of Communication and Theatre and Design Director, Ron Lauck, said the play is one of his favorites. Lauck once directed the play in the 1990s.

“What I like about it is it personifies the dining room,” said Lauck. “In other words, these are reports the dining room is giving us about the things it remembers in its lifetime.”

Lauck said he is liking how his ideas about the set design are appearing on the stage because the scenes in the play can be presented in many different ways.

“That offers opportunity and challenge for a number of actors,” said Lauck.

Members of the cast include Lane Tokie, Erin King, Ceylan Mercimek, Jakob Goins, Juan Dunlap, Maria Thurston, Adam Livingston, Ariana Del Signore, Olivia Brown, and Liz Files, with Julia Langan as Stage Manager.

Tickets for the public are $5 each, available at the door prior to the performance or by calling the theatre box office at 740-826-8376. Muskingum University faculty, staff, and students are admitted free with their university identification card.

Southeast Ohio Artist Brings Felt Work to Muskingum

The Louis O. Palmer Art Gallery held an exhibit for hand-selected Southeastern Ohio artists that led to a hands-on demonstration.

The artists whose works were featured in the exhibit, were selected by Yan Sun, Muskingum University Professor of Art.

“I want to give my students the best,” said Sun. “Anyone can give a lecture, but I select the best.”

A felt work piece by Southeast Ohio Artist, Jane Evans. Jane was a featured artist in the exhibit at the Louis O. Palmer Art Gallery.

According to Sun, there were 30 artists who contributed approximately 40 different works of art with varying types of media, some of which included felt work by Jane Evans.

Evans owns sheep and uses their wool for her artwork. She hand-washes the wool, dyes it any color she needs, and pulls it into malleable strands that she can then pluck into her canvas using a needle.

Many students took to the unfamiliar technique of felt work, using unique tools and a foam board for a work space.

Sun scheduled a lecture and demonstration for his Introduction to Art class on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Sun said by providing the students with fresh artists is a way to expose them to the world of art.

“I want them to understand visual art,” said Sun. “I want them to look far away, not just on the campus, but I want the students to look farther than this community or this country as well as all of the world.”

The students were given pieces of fabric and used small needles to prick the wool into the fabric.

Sophomore, Elijah Lepage, plucked felt for her art class with Yan Sun during the demonstration.

Evans explained the history behind this process. In factories, a machine held hundreds of tiny needles that would string the felt through the fabric. One day, someone got the idea to take out one of the needles and create more delicate creations.

Evans said she uses her life on the farm as her main source of inspiration.

The exhibit is open Monday-Friday starting at 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
