Muskingum University Head Football Coach Al Logan will step down from his position after 11 seasons with the Fighting Muskies.

Athletic Communication Director Tom Caudill said Logan’s hard work and dedication to Muskingum are appreciated.

“We’re really grateful to his service at the university and everything he’s done for the student athletes during his tenure,” said Caudill.

The announcement of Logan’s departure was made Nov. 29.

Caudill said Logan decided to step down from his position in order to pursue other interests outside of Muskingum.

Defensive Coordinator Ethan Wetzel will serve as the interim head coach for the Fighting Muskies football team, according to Caudill and the Fighting Muskies’ website.

Senior Wide Receiver and Team Captain Damon Jones said the announcement was “a shocker.”

“It is what it is,” said Jones. “At the end of the day, it’s a business, and if you don’t win they’re going to look for someone new.”

Jones said he hopes Wetzel is able to turn the program around after the recent 2-8 season.

“Production is key,” said Jones, “and if you don’t produce, these types of things happen.”

Logan was 29-81 in his 11 seasons with the Fighting Muskies and was the 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Coach of the Year.

Wetzel is a 2012 graduate of Muskingum University and was a three-year starter at outside linebacker with 203 tackles during his career. He was named OAC Player of the Week three times as a Fighting Muskie and earned All-OAC honors in 2011.

Caudill said a national search will take place for a new head coach to lead the Fighting Muskies football team.
