Muskingum University Mens Basketball came away with a key win Wednesday night at home against Oberlin 87-73 in the Anne C. Steele Center.

Sophomore Jarrell Marsh was the lead scorer for the team, racking up 22 points in the contest to pace the offense. Senior Rickey Wilson and first year Marcus Dempsey added 16 and 15 points to the effort, respectively.

The Muskies started out strong in the game, opening up a 25-9 lead halfway through the first half, before the Yeomen stormed back with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 25-20 with 2:00 remaining in the period.

The Muskies then went on a 12-4 run of their own to take a 37-24 lead into the halftime break.

The second half belonged to the Muskies, with the team putting up 50 points in the half to take control of the game. The Yeomen attempted a late comeback with the Muskie starters sitting on the bench, before Head Coach Travis Schwab put the starting five back in to finish off the game.

The win gives the Muskies their best start in 10 years, as the men opened up the season with an unblemished 4-0 mark. The team currently sits in a tie for second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The Muskies will put their unbeaten record on the line when they next see action on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they open up OAC play at home against John Carroll. WMCO will have the live call with pregame starting at 1:30 p.m.

Muskingum Joins the Giving Tuesday Movement

On the Tuesday following Thanksgiving for the past five years, nonprofit organizations around the world have participated in the Giving Tuesday campaign.

Giving Tuesday was first created in 2012 by a team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City.

The campaign is meant to kick off the charitable season, according to Giving Tuesday’s website, and has become a movement that supports giving and philanthropy.

According to the website, 2015’s Giving Tuesday saw 700,000 people raise $116,000,000, with people from 70 countries donating online.

This year, Muskingum University decided to join the movement for the first time, launching the #GIVINGTUEMU campaign on social media.

“The purpose is to celebrate generosity and giving back,” said Director of Alumni Relations, Jen Bronner.

The Giving Tuesday event ties into the whole Thanksgiving weekend, including the shopping events that directly follow Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This year’s Giving Tuesday fell on Nov. 29, when Muskingum joined other organizations and businesses around the globe in personalized messages encouraging others to give back through various means.

As of 11 a.m. on Nov. 29, these people have donated to the #GIVETUEMU campaign, according to the donation page on Facebook.

According to Bronner, the goal for Muskingum’s participation is to engage with alumni and friends and to help make giving back to the University easy to participate in.

Part of that plan was to start the #GIVINGTUEMU social media campaign and to encourage those donating to make their donations either through a text message or on a mobile donation site  on Facebook, as well as at the university website.
