Muskie food services fall in line with new dietary laws

Director of Campus Services, Jodie Swendryck, addressed recent changes regarding food items offered in the dining halls, the Bait Shop, and the Winn Café.

While some Muskingum students believe there is not enough variety in what is offered in the dining halls, Swendryck said this is not the case.

“We actually have six more items offered in each line than last year,” said Swendryck, adding to that four or five made-to-order sandwich options and a pizza station were added before this semester.

Swendryck said the reason for offering pizza daily comes from student feedback asking Muskingum’s dining halls to be more similar to other campuses.

Swendryck said students who may not like the current options in the dining halls should remain patient because the cycle renews every four weeks.

“We usually need to get through a cycle to take items off that we know aren’t going well here,” said Swendryck.

Swendryck said that the changes to the Bait Shop and Winn Café menus were needed to provide necessary nutritional information.

“This is why some of the local favorites are no longer on there,” said Swendryck. “we cannot follow the new law coming out in providing exact nutritional information.”

The new law will require restaurants across the United States to provide information such as the calories and ingredients in each item.

Swendryck said the menu changes could be helpful for students with special health needs.

“We have several students on campus with special dietary needs so the importance of this information is detrimental to their health and diet,” said Swenryck.

Swendryck said students can provide feedback by attending Dining with the Director every third Wednesday and can sign up through Student Senate. Students can also visit survey.medallia.com to participate in the Your Voice Counts survey to provide feedback on their dining experiences.

Changes made at the top of Student Senate while search for numbers continues

The beginning of the 2016 academic year brought change to the top of Muskingum University’s Student Senate, while the desire to add more senators to the ranks heightened.

Student Senate Executive Board President, Maggie Hale, stepped down from her role before the year began, creating a void at the very top of Student Senate.

Hale cited personal reasons for her departure from the Senate Executive Board.

Muskingum junior, Jason Schaumleffel, inducts new members into Student Senate as the new President of the Student Senate Executive Board.

To fill the Presidency, Executive Board Vice President, Jason Schaumleffel has moved to the office of Executive Board President, while sophomore Luke Lloyd was voted as the new Vice President in an internal election at the first Student Senate meeting of the school year on Aug. 30.

“I want to help bring changes to Senate and Muskingum’s campus as Vice President,” said Lloyd.

Several seats on Student Senate still remain vacant from the 2015-16 school year, including Male and Female Independent Representatives, and many more.

“Nothing has changed yet,” said Director of Student Involvement, Jessica Leigh-Edge.

To fill the remaining vacancies, Student Senate will hold a second round of general elections in the fall semester. These elections will accompany the yearly election of first-year class officers.

Anyone interested in running for Senate positions must complete petitions for candidacy by Sept. 9. Elections will then take place Sept. 15 and 16 on OrgSync.
