Muskingum University Football Head Coach Erik Ieuter is ready to watch his team compete against the #4 Mount Union Purple Raiders this weekend after coming off a loss to Heidelberg.

“We are excited for the opportunity. When you play in the OAC you get to play against the best of the best in DIII and Mount [Union] is at the top. Our guys are excited for the challenge,” said Ieuter.

Muskingum’s ground game was something that faltered last week against Heidelberg as they only had 32 yards. Muskingum did have a few backs out last weekend, but this is something Coach Ieuter and his team are looking to get back on track this weekend.

“We ran the ball pretty decently in the first half at times and were grinding out 4 yards a carry and then got in the hole a little bit. Up front we need to be physical,” said Ieuter.

Although Muskingum fell to Heidelberg on Oct. 30, Muskingum had some young players have career-best games. Freshman Daniel Robinson had eight hits and one sack while freshman Austin Willforth had seven stops with two tackles for a loss.

“We’ve had a lot of young guys step up. Daniel and Austin, when their numbers are called and they get the opportunity, they definitely stepped up in a big way. Our freshman class is really, really talented,” said Ieuter.

Looking forward to this weekend against Mount Union, Muskingum’s defense is going to have a hard fought game slowing down quarterback Braxton Plunk and the Purple Raiders’ offense.

“They’re elite offensively. We are going to have to make them work and try not to give up the big plays. If they’re scoring it’s eight play to 10 play drives, not two play drives. We’re going to have to create some turnovers as well which our defense has done a really good job of all year,” said Ieuter.

The Muskies travel to Alliance Saturday, Nov. 6 as they face the #4 Mount Union Purple Raiders.

WMCO is on the call with live coverage starting at 1:15 p.m. with Devon Fortune and Darrell Ponder.
