Village pool receives local grant

The Village of New Concord was awarded a grant from the Straker Foundation the first week of May.

The J.W. and M.H. Straker Charitable Foundation is based out of Zanesville and is interested in helping communities grow stronger.

Lyle announced at the May 10 council meeting the grant will go towards helping the pool grow in various ways such as a structural report for the pool, scholarships for future life guard certifications, and swimming lessons for children in the community.

The New Concord Area Pool is one of the community’s aging pools, being nearly 65 years old.

Once the pool had the structural report performed, that laid the foundation for where to go next with this project.

“I was so happy and excited about this opportunity for our community and I am so grateful to be working with a wonderful, local foundation like Straker,” said Mayor Jennifer Lyle.

Pool passes are available. Candidates interested in applying for a lifeguard position can visit the Village of New Concord’s website.

UPDATE May 28: The New Concord Area Pool will open for the 2021 summer season on Tuesday, June 1. The opening delay is due to rain and temperature forecasts during Memorial Day Weekend.
