Muskingum University’s Women in Politics Club celebrated the women of the campus during Women’s History Month in March.

Women in Politics is a new group on campus, created by Lorene Kelley. The club is a group of women who wish to get their voices heard and learn more about politics.

Kelley, president of the club, said, “we are all about connecting women, students to women in local positions of power and leadership.”

The group has hosted many events, one of which bringing in Christian Johnson, candidate in the 2020 election for Ohio State Senate District 20, and Alaina Swope, candidate in the 2020 election for State Representative District 97, to talk to the club and answer questions. They also had a viewing party of the Vice-Presidential Debate last October to spread voter knowledge.

For Women’s History Month, the club did several things to emphasize its importance.

Zoey Stenson said, “We made informational placards that we put on the quad and we’ve highlighted different women in politics, different issues, and different political organizations.”

They also had a Zoom panel on March 17 where members of the club discussed topics such as the history of women’s activism, the 19th amendment, and current issues women still face.

Throughout the month, the club spent time on the quad asking people women’s history trivia and handing out free Women’s History Month pens, cups, shirts, and lip balm.

Women in Politics plans to continue to host events to raise awareness about their club, women’s history, and to connect the women of campus to women in positions of power.

The group meets Tuesdays at 11 a.m. in Cambridge Hall 127.
