A new exhibition opened in Muskingum University’s Palmer Gallery on Jan. 27. The “Artistic Experiment and Exploration” features new sculptures by Brittany Sievers, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art. Photographs by Arthur Fields are also included in the display.

Both artists’ bodies of work are similar in the circular flow of the pieces. Additionally, the pieces they chose to showcase represent a memory or place in time.

“For Arthur’s work, he’s interested in celebrating the life of his mother through capturing the flowers from her funeral. My work is interested in highlighting the indirect connections we have daily, and to push the viewer into a mindful space of noticing,” said Sievers.

These flower photographs and all others showcased represent Arthur Fields’ mother, and the varied roles and relationships that made her a part of a community. These photographs and others in the exhibition are for sale.

In addition to the displays, their artists biographies are also shown. In them Fields and Sievers explained the process and inspiration of their artwork.

Sievers’ clay sculptures were created with the space of the gallery in mind and were meant to highlight the architectural elements.

“I am a process-based artist that is interested in connections between mass produced objects and the environment,” said Sievers.

The light-filled circular photographs taken by Fields, representative of his mother’s memory, were made through a process of lumen printing.

The exhibition is open in the Palmer Gallery until Feb. 18. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Muskingum University John and Annie Glenn Public Service Fellows Program and Office of Diversity, Access, and Inclusion sponsored a multicultural book drive on campus.

The group wanted to collect 200 books, according to Madison Johnson, member of fellows program.

The goal of the book drive is to support reading and diversity in classrooms by providing books on social justice, civil rights, and African American rights and history.

“This will connect the university with young people in the community while also providing us with the chance to celebrate Black History Month,” said Hallie Crawford of The John and Annie Glenn Public Service Fellows Program.

Other than donating books, people can have the opportunity to do a read aloud session on Zoom with a class or pre-record themselves reading a story for teachers to use in their classrooms.

The group was able to collect 150 books.

“The books raised will be divided up into bundles and sent off to each elementary school in Muskingum County,” said Crawford.

The readings will take place throughout the month of February.

Organizations who need service hours can reach out to the group. They will provide ways to help through the project. With questions contact Rev. Julia Wright at julias@muskingum.edu.
