A fire alarm was pulled inside of Muskingum University’s Patton Hall on Sunday evening around 8:40 p.m.
New Concord Police Chief Matt Hamsher said the fire department was dispatched regarding an unknown odor inside of Patton–a residence and dining hall–located on Muskingum’s east hill. When the fire department arrived they detected a smell that was consistent with something burning. This led them to evacuate the building to ensure student safety and to locate the source of the smell.
Muskingum students wait for word to reenter Patton Hall on campus on Sunday, Aug. 28. Muskingum will be following up with a report about the odor found inside the building.
Chief Hamsher said they ventilated the building using a thermal imaging camera to check the heat temperatures.
The fire department checked the entire building and determined the smell might be coming from the elevator maintenance room. After correspondence with Muskingum’s Physical Plant, Chief Hamsher and Physical Plant let students back in the building because there were no obvious signs of a fire. The smell disappeared after the building was ventilated.

Muskingum’s Physical Plant is following up with their report, but have ensured the dormitory is safe for students and staff.
